It is a sad day at Apple, Inc and offices across the world.

We were deeply saddened to read the news about Steve Job’s death on Google.  The Apple CEO and co-founder, Steve Jobs, died of pancreatic cancer today at just 56 years old and just a few days before the release of the new iPhone 4S.  Steve Jobs’s death was announced by Apple, his wife and Tim Cook:

“Team, I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today. Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. 4th Of July Celebration, Memories & Pittsburgh Summer Fun

When we think of Independence Day in Pittsburgh, the infamous Point State Park (“The Point”) comes to mind.  Residents of Pittsburgh can watch the City of Pittsburgh fireworks directly at Point State Park or from Mount Washington (South Side), North Shore (North Side) and the West End Overlook. It has always been the central location for all of our Pittsburgh summer and 4th of July celebration memories.

History of Point State Park

“Point State Park, located at the confluence of three rivers, is at the tip of Pittsburgh’s “Golden Triangle.” It commemorates and preserves the strategic and historic heritage of the area during the French and Indian War (1754 – 1763). Once a busy industrial area, the area had deteriorated into a commercial slum by the 1940s. The development of a state park was authorized in 1945 and the first parcel of the 36-acre property was purchased in 1946. The park was completed and dedicated in 1974. History of The Star Spangled Salute

“A Star Spangled Salute has aired on WPXI Channel 11 since July 4, 1990. The fireworks have been provided by Zambelli Fireworks. Before July 4, 1994 the fireworks show was on July 3 instead of the 4th. Some of the hosts of A Star Spangled Salute have been Chris Long, David Johnson, Bob Bruce, and Darieth Chisolm. The fireworks show usually start at around 9:37 p.m. if not a little earlier than that. The music for the Pittsburgh fireworks have be produced by KDKA (AM). Up until 2003 the music was produced by WDVE. Then in 2004 the Three Rivers Regatta combined with the event and WSHH produced the music from 2004 to 2007. Before WSHH took over the music it was a rockish type of music, in line with its format. Then the music has a patriotic tone to it. For the 2008 show WDVE has now taken over the music for the fireworks for 2008 only. Wish 99.7 has stopped providing the music for the show. 4th of July Fireworks
The City of Pittsburgh 4th of July fireworks display is at 9:35 p.m. at “The Point” (Point State Park – Downtown Pittsburgh) . This is an awesome fireworks diplay, plus fantastic day to picnic with the family, take your boat out on the Allegheny River, Ohio River, Monongahela River and just have a spectacular time with residents of Pittsburgh, PA and surrounding areas as we celebrate Independence Day.

Cinema in the Park
Make the evening special for family, dates or group of friends by joining other Pittsburghers for a movie in the park. This is one of the free summer activities hosted by the city of Pittsburgh and available at 1) Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park, 2) Arsenal Park in Lawrenceville, 3) Memorial Park in Brookline, 4) Grandview Park in Mt. Washington, 5) Observatory Hill in Riverview Park (North Side / North Shore area) and Elliott Overlook in the West End. Skateboarding
Not quite as common as baseball, though an increasingly popular activity for kids / teens in Pittsburgh, going to the skate park makes for great summer and year round fun. The city of Pittsburgh has 3 free skate parks (McKinley Skate Park in Beltzhoover, West Penn Skate Park in Polish Hill and Tuxedo Street Site near Sheraden Park). Other communities like Bethel Park, Boyce Park, South Park, etc) also have free skate parks. You can Google the locations by typing “skate parks near” and your zip code (ex: skate parks near 15206) to find the closest locations.

Swimming Pools
Outdoor Pools and Oliver Bath House (Indoor Pool) are open for business. This is an affordable option for families in the City of Pittsburgh and non-city residents that do not have summing pools at their homes. The Citiparks pools include times for lap swimming, water aerobic classes (age 16 to seniors), swim teams for the kids (including the Citiparks Championship Swim Meet), water carnivals, swim camps and more. Kennywood – “Must Do” when in Pittsburgh for the summer!
No summer would be complete without at least one visit to Kennywood Park. Most of our local schools plan a Kennywood Park day for their students, but if you are not from Pittsburgh or just want to do something fun for the day, Kennywood Park ranks high on the list of activities for all ages. Giant Eagle helps make this amusement park more affordable by providing an $11 discount if you purchase tickets through their grocery stores. You can save money by taking drinks, snacks and sandwiches in a cooler, though the potato patch serves large portions of fries; the corn dogs and ice cream cones are reasonable, too. There are lockers for storing items that you do not want to carry. Tables and empty pavilions could serve well for family meal times. Plus, Kennywood has a few specials on their website: June 30th – July 5th are Celebrate America days at Kennywood. Idlewild & Soakzone
Idlewild Park has a rich history. This park is perfect for kids of most ages; some teens might find it a bit “boring” because there are no roller coasters. On the other hand, there is an awesome water park (with something for all ages) that includes a salt water wave pool. Teens typically enjoy splashing with siblings and playing games. In addition to these features, it is important to note that a lot of the rides are old Kennywood classics which continue to be favorites over the years. There is a Mr. Rogers Neighborhood of Make Believe and the infamous Story Book Forest for younger children. Both are part of the long history of the park – http://www.idlewild.com/site/information.php – It is no wonder that Idlewild was 1) Voted Best Kid’s Park in the World by Amusement Today, 2) Voted Best Park for Families by National Amusement Park Historical Association and 3) Ranked as One of America’s Most Beautiful Theme Parks. It is located in Ligonier, PA which is about 50 miles from Pittsburgh. Their remaining BOGO days are June 20 – 24. Again, Giant Eagle grocery stores help with discounts to this amusement park. Point State Park
Yes, Pittsburgh is known for it’s many bridges, but we also have a ton of beautiful parks to explore. One of the most popular is the Point State Park (“The Point”) in downtown Pittsburgh. It is also called the “golden triangle”  as it s the historic location of the French and Indian War (1754 – 1763). This is also where the 3 rivers (Ohio River, Allegheny River, Monongahela River) come to a point and where a lot of our events are hosted because of the spacious beauty, history and cultural impact of the location. The park is open for your enjoyment. Walk down to the HUGE water fountain at the tip of the point and watch the boaters riding by. Visit the The Fort Pitt Museum and Fort Pitt Blockhouse to learn the history of this cherished park. You can have a picnic just about anywhere you choose … This Point is the epitome of Pittsburgh Summer Fun. The Regatta (July 2 – 4), Historical Events, Summer Concerts and 4th of July fireworks are hosted at this park.

Nothing says summer like a good old fashioned baseball game. Baseball is America’s favorite past time after all. There are always adult and little league team games in the different communities, though the Pittsburgh Pirates are obviously our favorite team and PNC PARK is our favorite place to watch the Pirates baseball game. Kate and Prince William’s wedding day (April 29, 2011) would have been one of those “distracting” days for sure. So, how do you avoid those types of mistakes and plan the perfect wedding in Pittsburgh, PA? The following are some helpful wedding ideas, DOs and DON’TS and planning tips:

HOW TO GET MARRIED IN PITTSBURGH
Both your fiancee and you will need to go to The Marriage License Bureau and complete an Application for Marriage License between the hours of 8:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M (Monday – Friday). This is located on the 1st floor of the City County Building at 414 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA. It costs $75 for the marriage license Allegheny County suggests that you “obtain a Marriage License 2 to 3 weeks before the scheduled date of their marriage ceremony”, but it typically takes 3 days from application to receive your marrige license and it is good for 60 days.

WEDDING DOs & DO NOTs

1. If you have a child / children, DO make your child / children the 1st you tell about your plan to get married. Address any concerns and plan to involve your child / children as much as possible. This will help your child / children accept and transition comfortably as it is not always easy for children to accept that another person shares your love.
2. DO tell your parents first, and then announce your engagement to family and friends at one time. You can send wedding announcements, launch a wedding website, post an announcement in the Celebrations section of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette or host a dinner party. This serves a vital purpose in setting your wedding date, therefore you want to announce and start discussing with everyone to insure that they are available or can make adjustment to attend on the day you want to get married.
3. DO start planning A.S.A.P. ~ set the wedding date, plan your budget and get ready to organize every single detail of your special day ~ Disorganized weddings are embarrassing, therefore you will want to rely on family and friends for help or hire a professional wedding planner. The goal is to create an occasion that is positively memorable for all.
4. DO NOT move forward blindly. You need to follow your budget starting with obtaining the marriage license all the way to honeymoon plans and when thank you cards should go out to your guests. There is a lot in between the two, therefore DO use a Wedding Planner w/ Worksheets to help keep your budget in perspective. It might change a few times as you are doing the initial research and cost analysis. Once you have set a budget for each detail, DO stick with the amounts that you are allocating to each detail.
5. DO NOT plan your wedding around major Holidays (including St Patrick’s Day, New Years Eve / Day and dates for different religious practices). Additionally, DO NOT plan to your wedding on Super Bowl Day, Final Four, The World Cup, The Olympics, The World Series or other major sports events. Friday the 13th, April Fools Day, Homecoming Dance / Prom Season and around local Pittsburgh events are dates that you should forget about hosting your wedding, too. Even more importantly, NEVER plan your wedding date for the same day as other friends, work associates and family members. Make venue or other adjustments if necessary, but DO NOT schedule conflicting wedding days for any of these reasons.
6. DO plan to wear comfortable shoes (have them custom made if need be) during rehearsal and on your wedding day. This is supposed to be one of the best days in your life, therefore it makes no sense to torture yourself by wearing uncomfortable shoes (no matter how cute or beautiful they are on your feet). Planning your wedding can become an overwhelming and time consuming project. Make sure to take good care of yourself by eating healthy and getting plenty of rest (during the planning process and up to your wedding day).
7. Please! Please! Please! DO NOT torture your brides maids by making them wear ugly dresses. Although it is hard to please the masses, there is nothing wrong with asking their opinion and taking a vote on the final dress options.
